MDPI has signed its first consortium agreement in the United States with the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries (CARL), marking a milestone in the publisher’s North American growth. The open-ended agreement provides 16 participating libraries and academic institutions with access to MDPI’s Institutional Open Access Program (IOAP) and discounted article processing charges (APCs) for affiliated scholars.
Institutions under the consortium include the University of Colorado Boulder, University of Denver, and Colorado School of Mines, among others. In 2024, more than 26,400 research articles by U.S. scholars were published by MDPI and indexed in the Web of Science. The new agreement aims to further enhance global accessibility and visibility of U.S. research.
This is MDPI’s second North American partnership following its earlier agreement with the Canadian Federal Science Libraries Network (FSLN). Combined, these collaborations represented nearly 14% of MDPI’s global publishing output in 2024. The partnership with CARL underscores growing institutional support for Open Access in North America and aligns with evolving U.S. 2024 NIH Public Access Policy and OSTP’s 2022 public access guidance.
