The MIT Press has announced a new mathematics book series in collaboration with the American Mathematical Society (AMS). The series, titled POLYMATH, will feature accessible and engaging mathematics books aimed at general readers.
Amy Brand, Director and Publisher of the MIT Press, explained that the series is intended to provide a home for books that balance intellectual rigor with playful thinking. She noted that the collaboration with AMS reflects both organizations’ commitment to broadening the reach of mathematical ideas.
Robert Harington, Chief Publishing Officer of AMS and series editor, described the initiative as an exciting collaborative venture. He emphasized that mathematics is relevant to everyday life and suggested that the series would highlight how mathematicians think, while demonstrating that math can be enjoyable rather than intimidating.
Whitney Rauenhorst of the MIT Press will serve as acquiring editor for the series. She expressed enthusiasm about working with mathematicians to produce books that connect curious readers with accessible mathematical concepts.
The series will publish three to four titles annually, presenting notable mathematicians and ideas through relatable and engaging approaches. The first book, Double‑Take: A Field Guide to Optical Illusions, Magic, and Movie Tricks Arising from Perspective Geometry by Annalisa Crannell, is scheduled for release in fall 2027. The book explores how artists, magicians, and filmmakers use perspective geometry to create visual effects that surprise and mislead audiences.
