In a recent announcement, Nick Lindsay, Director of Journals and Open Access at the MIT Press, underscored the Press's ongoing support for open-access publishing and its investment in fostering community-centric scholarly communication.
Highlighting recent milestones, Lindsay spotlighted the establishment of two of their youngest publications, Quantitative Science Studies (QSS) and Imaging Neuroscience, both of which were integrated into the MIT Press ecosystem in response to dissatisfaction expressed by the editorial boards of competing journals regarding commercial publisher practices such as high publication fees for authors.
QSS, serving as the official journal of the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics, has substantially flourished following its integration with MIT Press. It has emerged as a primary hub for disseminating rigorous open-access scholarship in the domain of science studies. Renowned for its outstanding contribution, QSS has been acknowledged as the #1 new journal in the field of library and information science based on citation rates, demonstrating a commendable growth trajectory.
Imaging Neuroscience, MIT Press's latest journal, rapidly garnered attention within the neuroimaging community following its inception in 2023. Previously, the editorial teams of Neuroimage and Neuroimage: Reports collectively disengaged from their former publisher due to exorbitant publication fees for authors and consequently joined MIT Press to establish Imaging Neuroscience. Despite its recent launch in July, the journal has swiftly attracted new scholarship and earned substantial support within the neuroimaging community, signifying an encouraging acceptance among scholars and researchers.
The MIT Press, by offering a platform with reduced publishing fees for authors while upholding the editorial excellence of these journals, has significantly broadened its reach and contributed to reshaping scholarly communication. The success of QSS and the early momentum of Imaging Neuroscience exemplify MIT Press's commitment to nurturing community-centered initiatives in the academic realm.
