MIT Press launches Imaging Neuroscience journal; to be led by former Neuroimage editorial teams, promising lower APC fees -

In a significant development within the academic publishing landscape, the MIT Press has announced the upcoming launch of Imaging Neuroscience, a new journal set to become a leading publication in the field of neuroimaging. The journal's Editor-in-Chief will be Dr. Stephen M. Smith, a distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Oxford University. Notably, the entire former editorial teams from Neuroimage and Neuroimage: Reports will join the new journal, making this transition an impactful step towards addressing the issue of high publication fees.

This move has garnered attention and praise, with The Chronicle of Higher Education recognizing it as a "high-profile move" in the ongoing battle over funding and accessibility in academic publishing. By establishing Imaging Neuroscience, the editorial teams aim to provide a solution to the challenge of exorbitant author processing charges (APCs) while upholding the highest standards of scholarship.

The support received from the community of authors, reviewers, and readers has reinforced the decision to embark on this new venture. The editorial teams are eager to demonstrate the path forward in non-profit publishing, emphasizing their commitment to rigor, scholarship, and service to the field of imaging neuroscience.

Imaging Neuroscience will concentrate on the imaging of the brain and spinal cord in humans and other species, encompassing neurophysiological and neuromodulation techniques. The journal will welcome research that significantly contributes to the understanding of brain function, structure, and behavior through the application of neuroimaging. This includes major advances in brain imaging methods. The publication will feature original research articles, review papers, theoretical models of brain function, data resource papers, software toolbox papers, technical notes, and positions on controversial issues.

Authors interested in submitting their work to Imaging Neuroscience can make use of the provisional submission platform at janeway.imaging-neuroscience.org, which is now open for new submissions. Initially, the journal will have an article processing charge of $1,600, with waivers available for low and middle-income countries. However, both the MIT Press and the editorial teams are actively seeking funding to reduce the APC in the coming years.

The launch of Imaging Neuroscience under the leadership of esteemed researchers and in collaboration with the MIT Press heralds a positive step towards more affordable and accessible publishing in the field of neuroimaging. This venture promises to foster impactful research, empower scholars, and facilitate knowledge dissemination, ultimately advancing the understanding of brain function and behavior.
