MIT Press unveils the open encyclopedia of cognitive science: A game-changer in open access reference works -

The MIT Press has announced a new addition to the world of open-access reference materials—the Open Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science (OECS). Serving as the intellectual successor to the esteemed MIT Encyclopedia of the Cognitive Sciences, the OECS is set to redefine the landscape of cognitive science and neuroscience research. Generously funded by the James S. McDonnell Foundation and the Allen Institute for AI, the inaugural set of articles is slated for publication in 2024.

In today's ever-evolving intellectual arena, questions surrounding the nature of the human mind, its development, interactions, and intricacies are more pressing than ever. These inquiries span the spectrum, from the intricacies of vast language models to the complexities of political polarization. The OECS steps into this intellectual fray as a dynamic and openly accessible web reference, ready to guide the next generation of cognitive exploration.

One distinguishing feature that sets the OECS apart from other reference works is its commitment to fostering cross-disciplinary comprehension. Cognitive science, by its very nature, is inherently interdisciplinary. It draws from an array of fields, including philosophy, psychology, anthropology, linguistics, neuroscience, computer science, statistics, and beyond. The OECS serves as a vital bridge, connecting these disparate resources and ideas within a single authoritative encyclopedia.

The OECS will not only establish a shared understanding of foundational concepts but also serve as a platform for cutting-edge debates. It will introduce core subfields, central concepts, significant phenomena, and key research methodologies in the field of cognitive science.

The project is led by a diverse and international editorial team, spearheaded by Michael Frank of Stanford University and Asifa Majid of the University of Oxford. The OECS will be hosted on the PubPub open publishing platform, embracing a digital-first format that facilitates new content forms and enables rapid updates in response to emerging discoveries. This approach ensures global accessibility without cost barriers, empowering researchers and students worldwide to engage with the latest insights in cognitive science.

As the intellectual landscape continues to evolve, the OECS is poised to equip readers with the essential tools needed to navigate the profound implications of cognition and intelligence in our contemporary society. Stay tuned for the launch of this groundbreaking reference work in 2024, as it promises to be a beacon of knowledge and understanding in the world of cognitive science.
