MNRAS Editor-in-Chief to step down in 2026 -

After more than a decade in the role, Professor David Flower will step down as Editor-in-Chief of Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS) at the end of 2026. A recruitment process for his successor will begin later this year.

Flower, an Emeritus Professor at the University of Durham, joined the MNRAS Editorial Board in 1985 and became Editor-in-Chief in 2012. He has overseen the expansion of the editorial board and guided the journal through its transition to open access, which was completed in 2023 alongside Geophysical Journal International.

First published in 1827, MNRAS is among the world’s largest and most prestigious astronomy journals. Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS), it features peer-reviewed research in astronomy and astrophysics, both observational and theoretical.

Flower’s research has focused on the physics and chemistry of the interstellar medium, including processes in star-forming regions. He has also produced atomic and molecular data to aid in interpreting spectral observations.
