Mobile computing to overtake desktops, says web-based survey -

The Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project and the Imagining the Internet Center at Elon University recently released the results of a web-based survey. According to the survey, mobile computing will outpace desktop technology in the next 10 years if challenges to access, security and interoperability are overcome.

The survey is the fourth in a series of five reports to be released in 2010. Respondents included individuals affiliated with the Health and Human Services, State departments, Defence, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the General Services and Social Security administrations.

The report, a survey of nearly 900 Internet and technology experts, revealed that 72 percent of respondents believe that technology users will conduct business using smart phone applications and shared mobile platforms rather than desktop computing. Easy access to information and the growing use of mobile devices are projected to be the key drivers of this trend. This, however, does not mean that most think the desktop will disappear soon, the report notes. The majority respondents see a hybrid model continuing, where both cloud computing and desktop computing take on different functions.

The survey follows reports in 2004, 2006 and 2008 that illuminated issues through the probing of attitudes held by technology experts.
