MobiSys 2010 to focus on novel mobile applications of computing technology -

The 8th annual international conference on Mobile Systems, Applications and Services is being planned for June 15-18, 2010 in San Francisco, CA, USA. MobiSys 2010 is jointly sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE (Special Interest Group on Mobile Systems, Users, Data, and Computing) and the USENIX association in cooperation with ACM SIGOPS (Special Interest Group on Operating Systems).

Novel mobile applications of computing technology are the focus of MobiSys 2010. Keynoter Rosalind Picard of the MIT Media Lab will present her research in a developing field that teaches machines to sense and respond more intelligently to people's emotion via mobile devices, robots, and both wearable and traditional computers. In addition, keynoter Deborah Estrin of the University of California, Los Angeles, will present her findings on Participatory Sensing, the process by which individuals and communities use mobile phones and cloud services to collect and analyse systematic data in ways that dramatically affect many aspects of daily life.

The MobiSys 2010 technical programme will feature innovative and significant research on the design, implementation, usage and evaluation of mobile computing and wireless systems, applications and services. More than 50 papers, posters and demonstrations will be presented on topics ranging from mobile sensing applications to enabling new smartphone applications, energy management, automotive applications and systems and applications for cellular networks.

ACM SIGMOBILE will also honour Deborah Estrin with the 2010 Outstanding Contribution Award for significant technical contributions and global advocacy of networked embedded systems. An ACM Fellow, Estrin was the first Athena Lecturer named by the ACM-W Council on Women in Computing (ACM-W), an honour created to recognise outstanding women researchers who have made fundamental research contributions to computer science. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering.
