National Science Library, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Wolters Kluwer release report on global research integrity -

In a significant step towards promoting transparency and accountability in scientific research, the National Science Library of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NSLC) and Wolters Kluwer have jointly released the report, “Consensus, Responsibility, and Guardianship — Ten Questions on Global Research Integrity.” The release took place during the 2024 World Laureates Forum, held from October 25 to 27 in Shanghai, and was announced at the prestigious Mobius Forum.

The annual World Laureates Forum, recognized as a critical platform for high-level discussions in the scientific community, served as the backdrop for the unveiling of this impactful report. The Mobius Forum session, themed Reshaping Scientific Publishing for Excellence, saw participation from over twenty leading scientists and researchers who engaged in in-depth discussions about advancing the integrity and quality of scientific publishing.

The “Ten Questions on Global Research Integrity” report is the culmination of a long-term research project jointly undertaken by the NSLC and Wolters Kluwer. It explores critical issues surrounding academic misconduct, highlighting the current challenges and potential solutions to foster a more responsible and sustainable research landscape. The report draws on insights from a broad range of stakeholders across the global research community.

Christie Wang, Vice President and Managing Director for China at Wolters Kluwer Global Growth Markets, opened the Mobius Forum by underscoring three pivotal factors that are reshaping the future of scientific publishing: collaboration, accessibility, and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI). According to Wang, these elements are essential for driving innovation and maintaining the integrity of research practices in an increasingly interconnected world.

In a keynote presentation, Prof. Yang Liying, Director of the Department of Scientometrics and Research Evaluation at the NSLC, provided an overview of the report's methodology and core findings. She emphasized that tackling issues of research integrity requires a collective effort, including bolstering education, refining evaluation frameworks, enhancing governance, and fostering global collaboration. These initiatives, she noted, are vital for establishing a more honest, transparent, and sustainable scientific ecosystem.

The collaboration between the NSLC and Wolters Kluwer is not new. In 2020, the two organizations established the “Medical Evaluation and Data Intelligence” Joint Laboratory to address the evolving challenges in research evaluation and integrity. The release of this report marks a significant milestone in their ongoing efforts to uphold the principles of responsible research.

The joint initiative has been supported by Wolters Kluwer’s Health Research team, including Rafael Sidi, Senior Vice President and General Manager, and Ian Burgess, Senior Director of Publishing and Open Research. Their combined efforts have led to actionable recommendations for strengthening research integrity, with a focus on improving transparency, accountability, and ethical standards in scientific research.

The report's release at the World Laureates Forum highlights the importance of global dialogue in addressing the challenges that threaten the integrity of scientific research. The NSLC and Wolters Kluwer aim to continue their efforts in promoting a responsible research culture, ensuring that the scientific community remains committed to the highest standards of excellence and integrity.
