Scientific publisher Nature Publishing Group (NPG), UK, has announced that its recently launched journal Nature Communications has published its first articles. This multidisciplinary, online-only journal is available at www.nature.com/naturecommunications.
The first articles showcase Nature Communications' functionality including a figure preview in article abstracts and an archive browsable by subject, date or article type. Eleven papers are currently online, with more scheduled for publication in the coming weeks. Published research comes from fields across the natural sciences including evolutionary biology, materials science, nanotechnology, genetics and cancer research.
Nature Communications authors can opt to make their published article open access, through payment of an article processing charge (APC). Four of the eleven papers published are open access (36%), and are published under Creative Commons licenses. These papers will be freely accessible in perpetuity.
As part of Nature Communications' launch, all of the journal's content will be freely available until September 30, 2010, after which time, subscribed content will be put behind a paywall. Site license access, pay-per-view, and memberships options are all available. Regardless of which option authors choose, publication in Nature Communications will enable authors to comply with funder mandates for public access.
