Neil Jefferies appointed as new Executive Director of the Open Preservation Foundation -

The Open Preservation Foundation (OPF) is pleased to announce the appointment of Neil Jefferies as its new Executive Director, effective November 1, 2024. Jefferies, an established leader in the field of open scholarship and digital preservation, will oversee the organization’s operations and collaborate with the Board to implement a newly developed strategy.

Neil Jefferies currently serves as an Innovation Specialist in Open Scholarship at the Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford, and holds a directorial position at Data Futures GmbH, a non-profit dedicated to sustainable digital resources. He has an impressive background as a co-creator of the International Image Interoperability Framework and the Oxford Common File Layout, and serves as Community Manager for the SWORD protocol. Additionally, he is an active member of the Bit List Council for the Digital Preservation Coalition.

Julie Allen, the outgoing Executive Director, had earlier announced her intention to focus on achieving a better work/life balance but will remain in her role through November to ensure a smooth handover.

Following the planned transition, Neil Jefferies will officially assume full responsibilities in December, while Julie will wrap up her outstanding projects. To ensure continuity, Julie will continue to support the OPF in external projects into the new year.

The Open Preservation Foundation remains committed to its mission of providing sustainable digital preservation solutions and looks forward to this new phase under Neil Jefferies' leadership.
