New IEEE standard offers directions for preparing design criteria documents for transmission lines -

Technical professional association IEEE, US, has announced that IEEE 1724 - Guide for the Preparation of a Transmission Line Design Criteria Document – has been approved and published. In addition, the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) Standards Board has approved a project to revise an existing standard on improving transmission lines' lightning performance.

IEEE 1724 provides a template to assist line design engineers in gathering and organising information in a coherent Design Criteria Document for overhead electric power transmission lines. The document addresses the need - with the retirement of experienced line design engineers - to provide a comprehensive discussion of the critical design parameters that are required to prepare the design of a reliable, economical transmission line that takes into account the requirements of the governmentally mandated codes and local conditions that can affect the reliability of the line. IEEE 1724 is currently available for purchase.

When completed, IEEE P1243 - Guide for Improving the Lightning Performance of Transmission Lines - will revise a guide covering all factors affecting the lightning flashover rate of overhead transmission lines with a phase-to-phase voltage exceeding 38kV and an average conductor height exceeding 10 meters. The guide assists engineers with understanding lightning impacts on electric power transmission lines and with applying methods to reduce the number of lightning-caused flashovers. It is being updated to address transmission-line surge arresters, which recently have been applied to improve lightning performance.
