New journal ‘Nature Communications’ accepting submissions -

Scientific publisher Nature Publishing Group (NPG), UK, has announced that its recently launched journal, Nature Communications, is inviting submissions of original research papers in all areas of the natural sciences. This multidisciplinary, online-only journal will publish its first articles in April 2010. The journal website is now live at www.nature.com/naturecommunications.

The scope of Nature Communications is seen to reflect NPG's core strengths in the biological, chemical and physical sciences. This includes areas in which Nature research journals publish community-focused research papers, and also areas like high-energy physics, astronomy, palaeontology and developmental biology, that aren't represented by a dedicated Nature research journal. The editors particularly welcome submissions from cross-disciplinary fields, such as physical chemistry and mathematical biology.

Nature Communications seeks to publish original research in one format, Articles, which may range in length from short communications through to more in-depth studies. All papers will be peer-reviewed to the standards associated with a Nature title. Like all Nature titles, Nature Communications has a team of independent in-house editors. If a paper's importance within the field is unclear, an editor may request advice from a member of the Nature Communications Editorial Advisory Panel in deciding whether to review it. This is meant to ensure the journal reflects the communities it is aiming to serve. On acceptance, publication will normally be within 28 days. In addition, Nature Communications will work to streamline the peer review process by reducing the number of rounds of peer review and limiting appeals.

If a paper was previously reviewed at another Nature journal, authors can opt to automatically transfer the manuscript and its associated referees' reports to Nature Communications for consideration. Authors can opt to make their published Article open access, through payment of an article processing charge (APC). Regardless of which option authors choose, publication in Nature Communications will enable authors to comply with funder mandates for public access.

Nature Communications will publish a proportion of content as open access and therefore operates a unique business model within the Nature family of journals. In addition to the open access content, some customers may be solely interested in specific subject areas within the journal's scope. In light of this, Nature Communications will offer customers a choice of flexible pricing models.
