New public database offers support for multiple sclerosis patients -

The MS Society has launched what is projected as the UK's first public database on multiple sclerosis. The online library gives patients and relatives the latest scientific research, newspaper articles and expert advice on the disease.

The website has material ranging from how children and families can cope with the effects of multiple sclerosis, to academic journals featuring the details of latest discoveries and research data related to the unpredictable disease. There are an estimated 10,400 sufferers of the disease in Scotland - one the highest levels in the world. It has few effective treatments and no known cure.

The MS Society, a UK-based charity, has committed £1.6 million to its work in Scotland. It promised last year to create a national register of multiple sclerosis sufferers in Scotland. Its research efforts are being aided by the Universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
