Speaker slides from the recently concluded National Federation of Advanced Information Services (NFAIS) 2011 conference are now available online. NFAIS is a membership association for organisations that create, organise and facilitate access to authoritative information. The 2011 NFAIS Annual Conference sessions centered around taming the tide of information.
It has been observed that information no longer resides solely within peer-reviewed journals. It is accessible from multiple resources scattered around the globe that do not conform to a uniform standard of quality - from publishers and other content providers to online communities and bloggers. No longer limited to text, information can be found in videos, sound tracks, pictures, data sets, charts and graphs. The information discovery process is changing for everyone and publishers, librarians and users all face the same challenge - to ensure that reliable information is not missed and misinformation is not used.
The 53rd NFAIS meet discussed how content providers can efficiently navigate the information tsunami to provide scholars and researchers with the reliable, relevant information that deserves their time and attention, no matter what the source or format. It also examined how information get filtered, made consumable and incorporated into workflows; what roles semantic search, image search and the social graph play in finding the specific information that users want; and who is improving the overall search experience with touch technologies, predictive tools and personalised search. Other topics discussed included how large volumes of information across all media can be acquired, processed and transmitted to an increasingly mobile and collaborative global research community; where that content is stored - on the desk, shelves, servers or in the cloud; and what new business practices are emerging that are in sync with the delivery of data 'chunks' and expectations for reuse of content.
The conference sought to provide attendees with an opportunity to network with the major players who are shaping the new world of information discovery, and learn how products and services can be enhanced to be a part of that world.
