The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) has announced that its Communication of Retractions, Removals, and Expressions of Concern (CREC) Recommended Practice (NISO RP-45-2024) has been selected as a finalist for the 2026 Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) EPIC Awards in the Research Integrity Tools category.
The EPIC Award winners will be announced at the SSP Annual Meeting on May 28, 2026, in Chula Vista, California. The CREC recommended practice establishes guidelines for the creation, transfer, and display of retraction-related metadata. The goal is to enable publishers, aggregators, full-text hosts, libraries, researchers, and other stakeholders to communicate updates to the scholarly record more effectively and ensure that readers can identify the status of publications.
The framework was developed by a working group of contributors and is designed to support transparency and consistency in scholarly publishing. It also builds on research conducted as part of the Reducing the Inadvertent Spread of Retracted Science (RISRS) project at the University of Illinois. The CREC recommended practice is publicly available and intended for use across publishing, library, and research communities.
