NISO unveils preliminary program for NISO Plus 2025 in Baltimore -

The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) has announced the release of the preliminary program for the NISO Plus 2025 conference, set to take place in Baltimore from February 10–12, 2025. The event promises two days of dynamic discussions on key issues shaping scholarly communications today, including research integrity, user access, open research, and artificial intelligence.

Research integrity will be a major theme, addressing the growing challenges of fraud and disinformation. Sessions will cover critical topics like researcher identity verification, communicating retractions, and adopting research stacks to uphold integrity standards.

On the topics of user access, privacy, and cybersecurity, attendees can expect discussions on Seamless Access, the implications of browser changes, strategies for protecting patron privacy, and balancing the need for broad access with data security.

Open research and open access will also take center stage. Sessions will explore various OA models, the evaluation of OA content metrics, and the importance of equitable access in global scholarly publishing. Topics related to open data repositories and inclusive OA frameworks will be key areas of focus.

Artificial intelligence and its growing role in scholarly communications will be featured prominently. The program includes a report on generative AI use in higher education, discussions on ethical transparency, and case studies showcasing AI’s ability to enhance metadata and discoverability.

Participants will also benefit from NISO standards updates, featuring progress reports on projects such as Open Access Business Processes and Accessibility Remediation Metadata.

Key highlights of NISO Plus 2025 include:

• An opening keynote by Cindy Hohl, Director of Operations and Policy Analysis at the Kansas City Library and President of the American Library Association, titled “The Human Standard: Equal Library Access for All.”

• The annual awards luncheon, which will celebrate contributions to the information community and introduce the 2025 NISO Scholarship Awards recipients.

• A pre-conference day on February 10, featuring an in-depth session on AI tools and use cases and a workshop on evaluating the performance of OA eBooks. For the first time, JATS-Con, the conference for users of the Journal Article Tag Suite standard, will also be held as a full-day pre-conference event.

Attendees are encouraged to register by January 10, 2025, to secure early bird rates and book hotel accommodations early.
