The David Shulenburger Office of Scholarly Communication & Copyright at the University of Kansas (KU) has officially opened the call for nominations for the esteemed Shulenburger Award for Innovation & Advocacy in Scholarly Communication. The nomination period will remain open until September 18, providing an opportunity to recognize and celebrate individuals and academic departments that have exhibited outstanding commitment to open access and revolutionary thinking in scholarly communication.
Instituted in 2014, following a generous donation by former KU Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor, David Shulenburger, the Shulenburger Award stands as a testament to the university's dedication to fostering innovation and advocacy in scholarly communication. This accolade seeks to honor KU faculty, staff, students, and academic departments that have pioneered open access initiatives and breakthroughs in scholarly communication. The award also acknowledges those who have worked tirelessly to drive positive change within the scholarly communication system.
The award serves as a platform to spotlight up to two outstanding individuals or departments whose contributions align with the principles of open access and scholarly communication. Selected recipients will be granted awards ranging from $500 to $2,500. Additionally, individual awardees may be extended invitations to join KU's esteemed Open Access Advisory Board. Over the years, this prestigious recognition has been bestowed upon 11 deserving honorees, including the 2022 laureates – Shannon O'Lear, a Professor in the Department of Geography & Atmospheric Science and Director of the Environmental Studies Program, as well as Corey Rayburn Yung, a Professor in the School of Law.
Nominations are actively being sought, and the window for submissions remains open until September 18. The nomination process welcomes both third-party and self-nominations. Further details and submission guidelines can be accessed on the official KU Libraries' website, or alternatively, individuals seeking more information can reach out to Sarah Goodwin Thiel via email at sgthiel@ku.edu.
As the University of Kansas embraces a culture of open access and transformative scholarly communication, the Shulenburger Award serves as a testament to the institution's commitment to nurturing innovative ideas and advocating for positive change within the realm of academic publishing.
