Frontiers has renewed its national open access agreement with Norway for 2025, further cementing the country’s leadership in advancing open science. Originally signed in 2020 and facilitated by the Norwegian Agency for Shared Services in Education and Research (Sikt), this agreement streamlines the publishing process for Norwegian researchers while reinforcing the nation’s commitment to open access publishing and research transparency.
Under the renewed agreement, 36 Norwegian institutions and research centers will continue to benefit from simplified publishing models and discounted Article Processing Charges (APCs). The collaboration is designed to provide high-quality research outputs to a broader audience, enhancing accessibility to publicly funded research.
As part of the agreement, new institutions can join at any time without incurring an annual participation fee, making it easier for Norway’s academic community to contribute to the growing open access movement.
Key Benefits for Norwegian Institutions and Researchers:
• National Discount on APCs: Participants in the agreement receive a national discount on publication fees, making open access publishing more affordable.
• Centralized Invoicing: Simplified and flexible invoicing options streamline the publishing process for Norwegian institutions.
• Transparent Payment Solutions: The agreement offers clear and straightforward payment processes, ensuring transparency for all involved parties.
• Dedicated Account Manager: A dedicated account manager is available to support library staff, ensuring smooth and efficient service.
To be eligible for the benefits of this agreement, researchers must ensure that the corresponding author is affiliated with a participating Sikt institution and that they use their institutional email address when submitting manuscripts. Researchers are encouraged to consult their institutional library for further guidance and to confirm eligibility.
The renewal of the agreement reaffirms Norway's continued leadership in the open science movement, highlighting the country’s strong governmental and institutional support for open access initiatives. As Norway accelerates its transition to a fully open access research ecosystem, this partnership promotes the free exchange of scientific knowledge, ensuring that publicly funded research is freely available to researchers, policymakers, and the wider public. The agreement strengthens transparency, accessibility, and the global dissemination of research.
By enhancing open access publishing in Norway, this partnership sets an example for other nations looking to foster a more open and collaborative global research community. The ongoing commitment to open access is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the future of scientific discovery and innovation.
