The Oxford University Press (OUP) has announced that open access (OA) articles published in over 50 journals in the Oxford Open initiative will now automatically be deposited in PubMed Central (PMC). PubMed Central is a free digital archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), developed and managed by NIH's National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in the National Library of Medicine (NLM).
Authors who have paid a fee to make their articles OA in an Oxford Open biomedical journal will not be required to deposit their articles into PMC, as Oxford Journals will do so on their behalf. The final published version of their article will be freely available immediately via PMC and also directly from the journal website. Oxford Journals is depositing into PMC all OA papers that have been or will be published in 58 journals participating in the Oxford Open initiative.
Regular data feeds between PMC and the journals concerned have been set up. Recently published OA content is being deposited first, followed by older content. OUP has also prepared some information and guidelines for authors of various funding agencies. These guidelines are available online at http://www.oxfordjournals.org/for_authors/repositories.html.
