OASPA 2025 conference to address global complexity in the transition to 100% open access -

The Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association (OASPA) has announced the full programme for its 2025 annual conference, scheduled to take place from 22–24 September 2025 at the Irish College Leuven, Belgium. Centered around the theme "Embracing the Complexity – how do we get to 100% OA?", the event aims to explore both the structural and cultural challenges that continue to shape the future of open access publishing.

Registration is now open, with participants encouraged to secure their place early. A dedicated call has also been issued for ‘Poster Lightning Talk’ proposals—brief five-minute presentations that introduce new initiatives, research, or projects, each accompanied by a poster that will be displayed during scheduled breaks for informal discussions. Submissions are due by April 16, 2025, and must include a concise summary of the proposal within a 250-word limit. Proposals from regions outside North America and Europe are especially encouraged to broaden the global scope of the event.

This year’s conference will feature keynote addresses, panel discussions, interactive workshops, and networking opportunities, with a focus on strategic dialogue and knowledge exchange across the scholarly publishing community.

Planned topics include:

  • Structural reform: addressing researcher incentives and integrity within the push toward universal open access
  • Open access book publishing: insights from fully OA publishers
  • Operational models of fully open access journals relying on article processing charges
  • Challenges and motivations for stakeholders undecided about OA transitions
  • The interplay of political uncertainty, institutional responsibility, and global policy frameworks in enabling open access
  • Evolving funder mandates and their role in shaping a 100% OA future
  • Sustainable and inclusive models for open access at scale
  • Identifying persistent barriers and opportunities that could redefine the OA movement
  • The central role of academic libraries in supporting the transition
  • Navigating the multifaceted impacts of shifting to universal open access

Further details, including speaker announcements and session abstracts, will be made available as the event approaches.
