OCLC forms Review Board to examine principles for sharing library data -

Global library cooperative Online Computer Library Center, Inc. (OCLC) has announced that its board has named a Review Board of Shared Data Creation and Stewardship. The review group will represent the membership and inform OCLC on the principles and best practices for sharing library data. It will also discuss the policy for use and transfer of WorldCat Records with the OCLC membership and the global library community.

Dr. Jennifer Younger of the University of Notre Dame, who is also an OCLC Members Council delegate, will chair the Review Board. Karen Calhoun, Vice President, OCLC WorldCat and Metadata Services, will serve as liaison between the Review Board and OCLC.

The other functions of the Review Board include: to consult with librarians and member representatives as appropriate; and review reports, letters and comments including blog and listserv messages from the global library community regarding the revised policy.

The Review Board began its work with a meeting on February 4, and is already putting in place the means for Members Council delegates and other constituencies to offer input and comments. It will ultimately provide findings to the President of Members Council, the Chair of the Board of Trustees, and the OCLC President and CEO.

Implementation of the Record Use Policy had been set for February 2009, but implementation has been delayed and the policy will be under further review by the OCLC Board of Trustees and Members Council into the third quarter of 2009.

The 71-delegate Members Council seeks to support OCLC's mission by serving as the key discussion forum and communications link between member libraries, regional networks and other partners, and OCLC management. By providing a channel for recommendations and questions from Members Council delegates, approving changes in the Code of Regulations and electing six members of the Board of Trustees, the Members Council looks to shape the future direction of OCLC.
