OCLC releases position paper on the future of linked data in library cataloging -

OCLC, the global leader in library cataloging and metadata services, has published a new position paper titled "Linked data: The future of library cataloging." The paper underscores the significant value linked data can bring to library catalogs and outlines a strategy for supporting libraries as they transition to this new paradigm.

The 12-page document builds on OCLC's extensive history in linked data research, detailing the organization's journey from initial experiments and prototypes to the creation of over 150 million WorldCat Entities. It highlights the recent development of web applications and APIs available through OCLC Meridian, which libraries can use to begin integrating linked data.

OCLC is committed to creating a hybrid environment that allows libraries to experiment with linked data and realize its potential for enhancing the discoverability of library resources. By integrating linked data within existing systems and services, OCLC aims to make the transition as seamless as possible while developing new tools to facilitate this process.

Linked data leverages the scalable foundation of WorldCat, enhancing its infrastructure to support linked data integration and interoperability on a global scale. This approach will enable WorldCat to transcend the limitations of MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging) and connect to diverse information streams and resources on the web. This expansion will not only increase the reach of WorldCat but also enable other organizations and partners to connect back to libraries, creating a more interconnected and accessible information ecosystem.

The position paper answers critical questions about the importance of moving to linked data for libraries, providing a clear and comprehensive strategy for this transition. It emphasizes how linked data can transform library cataloging and improve the user experience for information seekers.
