Library information provider OCLC Research, US, has released a report, titled ‘Greening Interlibrary Loan Practices,’ on the environmental impact of current interlibrary loan practices. The report details the findings from an OCLC Research-sponsored study of the environmental impact of current interlibrary loan practices, as well as recommended practices for reducing the carbon footprint of resource sharing operations worldwide.
California Environmental Associates, the environmental impact consultant hired for this study, utilised data provided by OCLC and gathered during interviews with staff at a dozen US libraries. The consultants correlated specific interlending practices with measurable impacts on greenhouse gas emission levels.
OCLC Research programme officer Dennis Massie discussed the findings from the OCLC Research-sponsored study during the Greening ILL webinar on May 6, 2010. The report is available online at http://www.oclc.org/research/publications/library/2010/2010-07.pdf.
