Open Educational Resources programme seeks to drive UK content revolution -

The UK's Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) has announced that the International Open Educational Resources (OER) Symposium will be held in London on July 23, 2010. Speaking ahead of the OER symposium, Brian Lamb from the University of British Columbia has urged higher education to show leadership in difficult times. His argument is seen to be particularly topical as the government's digital champion, Martha Lane Fox, is taking up the challenge of getting more people online.

OER, a programme of JISC and the Higher Education Academy, is seeking to drive a content revolution in the UK. It is working with universities and colleges to share educational materials freely online and make them available to anyone worldwide. Open educational resources are projected to be one of the building blocks of digital Britain in the 21st century.

The OER Symposium is expected to showcase the work of the pilot programme and demonstrate how the UK is working towards the sustainable development and delivery of OERs. The event will share the experiences of the pilot projects which, since early 2009, have been working to make thousands of resources freely available through the UK OER programme. Other institutions can expect to learn from their many successes and hear how the teams overcame significant challenges, to provide truly open educational resources, both across institutional programmes and across subject communities.
