The landscape of Open Science is continuously evolving, driven by technological advancements and updates in mandates and standards. In line with this evolution, OpenAIRE is committed to consistently improving and optimizing its guidelines, leading to increased interoperability and compatibility. As a gateway to the global Research and Innovation ecosystem, OpenAIRE provides access to a wide range of resources and opportunities.
Compliance with the OpenAIRE Guidelines is a crucial requirement for a data source to be harvested by OpenAIRE. To seamlessly integrate into the OpenAIRE Graph, content providers can leverage the OpenAIRE PROVIDE service. This service acts as a comprehensive web service, serving as a one-stop-shop that connects content providers, OpenAIRE, and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). By utilizing OpenAIRE PROVIDE, content providers become essential building blocks in the global research community. The service offers repository managers personalized dashboards and a suite of services designed to enhance metadata collections and ensure interoperability based on globally recognized standards.
Upgrading repositories to align with the latest versions of the OpenAIRE guidelines significantly enhances the interoperability and flexibility of the metadata of research products. It also facilitates the establishment of links and relationships with various types of research products and entities, enriches them with additional Persistent Identifiers, includes authors' ORCID iDs, and improves subject classifications by incorporating subject schemes such as ACM and Mesh.
The OpenAIRE guidelines are aligned with the FAIR Principles, which promote the organization and structuring of research products for easy access, understanding, and reuse. OpenAIRE Guidelines offer content providers a direct path to achieving FAIRness, ensuring compliance with the latest versions guarantees a sufficient level of FAIR compliance. Being compliant with the most recent versions of the OpenAIRE Guidelines signifies that the repository is FAIR enough!
OpenAIRE serves as the gateway to the EOSC, granting entry into its expansive ecosystem. The highly anticipated EOSC Portal Catalogue and Marketplace integrated platform will exclusively feature registered data sources from OpenAIRE that align with the OpenAIRE guidelines for Literature Repositories (versions 3.0 and 4.0). Ensuring alignment with these guidelines not only guarantees eligibility for inclusion but also positions the data source to leverage the substantial influence of this platform, unlocking valuable opportunities for visibility and engagement.
Aligned with OpenAIRE's Strategy, the organization has established a robust socio-technical European e-Infrastructure over its ten-year operation. This infrastructure comprises a service provider, a network of expert organizations, and individuals working together to facilitate the efficient implementation of Open Science practices, services, and policies.
As part of the Strategy 2023-2025, OpenAIRE has outlined specific action lines to realize its strategic priorities. One of these action lines involves the development of tools and toolkits for policies while actively contributing to the alignment of EU Open Science policies. The ongoing process of refining the OpenAIRE Guidelines plays a significant role in achieving these goals.
The OpenAIRE Guidelines also play a vital role in OpenAIRE's strategic approach to addressing sustainability, openness, and modernization challenges faced by Scholarly Infrastructures. By ensuring enhanced interoperability, these guidelines aim to meet the diverse needs and expectations of all stakeholders involved in the Open Science ecosystem.Click here to read the original press release.
