OpenAIRE, in partnership with HEAL-Link, has launched a project to establish the National Infrastructure for Mapping Greece’s Research Activity, an initiative aimed at enhancing transparency, collaboration, and innovation in scholarly communication. The project aligns with Greece’s commitment to Open Science and reflects broader European efforts to advance open access, data sharing, and reproducibility in research.
The new infrastructure will provide comprehensive data on research production across Greek academic institutions, offering a valuable resource for policymakers, universities, and the research community. By tracking key indicators related to institutional research output, open access adoption, research data sharing, reproducibility, linked science, and societal engagement, the monitor aims to align Greece’s research landscape with European and global Open Science standards. Additionally, it will capture bibliometric data to offer a detailed assessment of research output across Greek academic institutions.
A core objective of the monitor is to present a holistic view of research performance, recognizing that while international rankings influence institutional standing, they often provide an incomplete representation of research impact. The initiative seeks to address gaps in research assessment methodologies by integrating multiple performance indicators.
Key objectives of the National Infrastructure for Mapping Greece’s Research Activity:
• Tracking bibliometric data to provide a comprehensive analysis of research output across Greek academic institutions.
• Assessing the adoption and impact of Open Science practices within the national research ecosystem.
• Enhancing interoperability by interlinking research outputs, projects, and funding data to improve discoverability and facilitate collaboration.
• Identifying gaps and opportunities for strengthening Open Science policies and infrastructure in Greece.
• Aligning national research efforts with European Open Science goals and global best practices.
• Providing data-driven insights to support Greece’s transition toward a Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) research ecosystem.
OpenAIRE will apply its expertise in Open Science monitoring, drawing from its work on European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) initiatives and various European research projects. The implementation will involve universities, funders, and policymakers, ensuring broad stakeholder engagement. Insights generated from the monitor will contribute to future Open Science policy developments in Greece.
