Pakistan's Higher Education Commission (HEC) has announced that students and faculty members of universities across the country will now have online access to over 40,000 text books and research journals. With this initiative, Pakistan has become one of the first few countries in the world in which the entire student community will have free access to a large knowledge source.
In 2006, the HEC commissioned a case study of its Digital Library by International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications that covered the content, training, marketing, finance, monitoring and evaluation and impact of the library. Under its Digital Library Programme, an open access online portal has been set up through which all journals published in the nation are made available for worldwide electronic access. The site allows international exposure of research conducted within Pakistan. Also, it helps in the international peer-review process of indigenous publications. Students, faculty and staff will now have access to e-books and all research technologies offered through this platform.
More than 220 international publishers have been identified for the access. This includes Blackwell Synergy, John Wiley, Springer Publishing, Oxford University Press, Stanford University Press, Taylor and Francis, Cambridge University Press, Sybex, McGraw Hill Book Companies, BMJ Publishing Group, Emerald, MIT Press and United Nations University Press.
