Paradigm Publishing Services, a new division of academic publisher De Gruyter, is taking steps to establish a sustainable model for open access book publishing. In response to calls from the scholarly community, Paradigm Publishing Services, including the University Press Library Group and Ubiquity, has introduced the University Press Library Open (UPLO). This open access initiative and eBook platform, hosted by Ubiquity, focuses on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
UPLO draws from previous open access eBook initiatives like TOME, Luminos, and Opening the Future. By bringing together the influence of over 50 university press partners, 115 participating libraries, consortia, aggregators, vendors, and authors, Paradigm Publishing Services aims for a community-driven approach. The goal is to distribute financial responsibilities across the scholarly publishing ecosystem, ensuring the long-term sustainability of open access book publishing.
At the core of UPLO is eBound, a not-for-profit foundation established by De Gruyter in 2022. eBound's mission is to advocate for the publishing, sustainability, and accessibility of mission-driven scholarly monographs for not-for-profit and open access publishers.
The launch of Paradigm Publishing Services and UPLO underscores De Gruyter's commitment to advancing financially sustainable publishing while supporting a sustainable future for partner presses.
