Paul Nurse elected as next President of the Royal Society -

Paul Nurse, a Nobel Prize-winning geneticist and cell biologist, has been elected as the next President of the Royal Society. He will officially assume the role on December 1, 2025, succeeding the current president, Adrian Smith. The result of the election was confirmed following a ballot of the Society’s Fellowship on October 8, which saw the highest voter turnout in recent history, with 90% in favor, 6% against, and 4% abstaining.

Nurse's groundbreaking work in cell biology, particularly his discoveries about the cell cycle, earned him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2001. Over the course of his distinguished career, he has held prominent positions, including President of Rockefeller University in New York and Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK. He will step down from his current role as Chief Executive of the Francis Crick Institute in July 2025.

With his deep scientific expertise and leadership experience, Paul Nurse’s appointment as President is seen as a significant moment for the Royal Society as it continues to advance its mission of promoting excellence in science.
