Peer Review Week highlights the enduring role of reviewers in the AI era -

During Peer Review Week, the annual global event that underscores the importance of peer review, IOP Publishing (IOPP) emphasized the continuing contribution of reviewers in maintaining trust in science in the age of artificial intelligence (AI).

As AI reshapes the research and publishing landscape, peer reviewers remain central to improving research through the expertise and knowledge they bring to the process. The campaign “The Difference I Make as a Reviewer” showcases the perspectives of reviewers, illustrating how rigorous peer review strengthens research, challenges assumptions, identifies opportunities for improvement, and ensures that published findings are robust and reliable.

Kim Eggleton, Head of Peer Review and Research Integrity at IOP Publishing, noted that AI is prompting a reassessment of many aspects of the research ecosystem. She explained that while AI has the potential to accelerate discovery and identify integrity concerns at scale, it also raises questions about how trust in research is established and maintained. Eggleton stressed that the role of peer reviewers remains unchanged, as they provide expertise, judgment, and critical thinking that technology cannot replicate. She added that reviewers strengthen research, enhance its quality, and build trust in science, with AI serving as a complement rather than a replacement.

IOP Publishing, as a purpose‑driven publisher, continues to support peer reviewers by offering free training, certification, feedback, and guidance to help them develop their skills and confidence.
