Pensoft Publishers has announced the beta launch of ORPHO, an online platform designed to streamline collaborative scientific writing and produce AI‑ready scholarly literature. The platform combines intuitive writing tools with semantic enrichment capabilities, building on Pensoft’s fifteen years of experience in developing semantic publishing infrastructure.
Within a shared workspace, researchers can use customizable templates, create their own, or import existing files. Collaboration is supported through track changes, role‑based user rights, inline comments, and document‑level chat. ORPHO automatically structures scientific content according to international publishing standards, ensuring that published outputs are findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR).
Unlike the ARPHA Writing Tool, ORPHO functions as a standalone real‑time collaborative workspace, independent of journals hosted on Pensoft’s ARPHA Publishing Platform. Once manuscripts are complete, authors receive AI‑FAIR machine‑readable content that can be formatted to meet multiple journal requirements.
The platform is currently being piloted in biodiversity science. ORPHO integrates with biodiversity data aggregators such as the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD), and PlutoF, enabling import and export of structured data. Taxon names can be automatically imported and linked through persistent identifiers from sources including the Catalogue of Life (CoL), International Plant Names Index (IPNI), World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS), and World Flora Online (WFO).
The name ORPHO reflects both scientific and cultural heritage. It references Orphium frutescens, a plant species endemic to South Africa, and evokes Orpheus, the legendary musician of ancient Thrace. The name also acknowledges the Rhodopi Mountains in Bulgaria, where Pensoft is headquartered.
Lyubomir Penev, founder and CEO of Pensoft, stated that researchers face increasing formatting requirements and technical demands in an AI‑driven environment. He explained that ORPHO was developed to reduce these challenges by providing an intuitive, collaborative workspace that allows scientists to focus on their research.
The beta release invites researchers, institutions, and publishing platforms to trial ORPHO and provide feedback. Access is available at orpho.net.
