Digital preservation specialist Portico has grown to include more than 300 participating publishers—representing more than 2,000 societies and associations—and more than half are small publishers. The recent increase in signings of 'small' publishers that produce ten titles or fewer is a result of community feedback.
Portico began working with large commercial publishers, such as Elsevier and John Wiley & Sons, as well as society publishers and university presses, in 2005. The archive has expanded its range of relationships ever since. Recent small publishers that have joined include libraries as publishers, such as Pacific University Libraries and University of Kansas Libraries, and small international presses such as Methaodos Revista de Ciencias Sociales in Spain and Hygeia Press in Italy.
Portico has developed guidelines for and, where possible, tools to facilitate content deposits to ease the path to participation. For example, Portico built an export plugin for the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. Acting on recommendations from the community, Portico has been able to establish relationships with long tail publishers and increase awareness of the vital need for preservation of their content.
In 2011, 2CUL, a partnership between Columbia and Cornell university libraries, highlighted the need for increased preservation of journals from small publishers.
Today, Portico preserves more than 46 million archival units, which include journal articles, books, images, videos, and newspaper issues through their E-Journal, E-Book, and D-Collection Services.
