Portland Press, the publishing arm of the Biochemical Society, has announced the launch of a new Portal and Viewer to support the transparency and reproducibility of supporting data published alongside articles. The Portal, available at https://portlandpress.figshare.com/, publishes supporting data under an openly available Creative Commons license and assigns a DOI for citing and reuse. The Viewer is embedded into journal articles to allow readers to see and interact with supporting data directly in the article.
The Portal and Viewer are currently available for three of Portland Press’ journals: Biochemical Journal, Clinical Science and Neuronal Signaling, with a view of rolling this out for additional journals in their portfolio in the future.
Authors are able to deposit supporting data via an upload form that asks for some metadata about the supporting data and accepts any file type from spreadsheets and images to GIFs and video files. Most files are viewable directly in the browser from the Portal for maximum community engagement. Authors can also track reuse statistics on their supporting data including views, downloads, citations, and Altmetric scores.
