Preprints.org has reached a major milestone: over 100,000 preprints have been posted since its inception in 2016, reflecting its growing importance in accelerating research dissemination and supporting global scientific collaboration.
The milestone was made possible by contributions from over 350,000 researchers, the support of 309 Advisory Board members, and numerous screeners. Preprints.org has positioned itself as the fifth-largest preprint platform globally, with over 72 million downloads and 22 million views. The platform is indexed in Web of Science’s Preprint Citation Index, Europe PMC, and Crossref.
Supported by a series of feature rollouts, the platform has added 20,000 preprints, since October 2024, These include a new user interface, mobile-friendly upgrades, improved search tools, and enhanced security. Additional developments include the launch of a curated Reading List feature, integration with Bluesky for outreach, a PREreview request tool, and a Search Subscription feature introduced on June 5, 2025.
Approximately 56% of hosted preprints have subsequently been published in peer-reviewed journals, supporting the platform’s role as a bridge between early-stage research and formal publication. Preprints.org has also introduced new community initiatives, such as ‘Researcher Voices,’ a feature spotlighting authors through short interviews.
Preprints.org plans to expand community engagement further and maintain its commitment to open science by enhancing discoverability, transparency, and researcher support.
