Professor Josef Köhrle appointed inaugural Editor-in-Chief of new journal, Environmental Endocrinology -

The European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Josef Köhrle as the first Editor-in-Chief of its newly launched journal, Environmental Endocrinology. This interdisciplinary, open-access journal will focus on high-quality research exploring the impact of environmental factors on hormone systems in humans and other living organisms, integrating the One Health perspective.

Environmental Endocrinology aims to advance knowledge on how environmental elements influence hormonal health, featuring clinical, translational, and basic research. The inaugural issue is scheduled for release in Q2 2025, and the journal is now accepting manuscript submissions via its website.

Professor Köhrle, a distinguished figure in the field, has served as Senior Professor of Molecular Endocrinology at the Institute of Experimental Endocrinology, Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, since 2017, following a 15-year tenure as the institute’s director. He holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry and endocrinology from the University of Hanover and earned his Habilitation in Experimental Endocrinology from Medizinische Hochschule in Hanover in 1991.

Throughout his career, Professor Köhrle has been actively involved in numerous professional organizations. He served as president of the German Society of Endocrinology (2017-2020) and the European Thyroid Association (2006-2008). He also co-leads ESE’s Endocrine-disrupting Chemicals (EDC) Working Group, is co-chair of the ESE Focus Area in Environmental Endocrinology, and is a member of the EU EDC Task Force of the Endocrine Society.

His leadership is expected to shape Environmental Endocrinology into a key platform for research at the intersection of endocrinology and environmental science, providing valuable insights into how environmental changes affect endocrine health across species.
