Publishers Association's 'Publishing Declares' pledge reaches 200 signatories -

The Publishers Association’s sustainability initiative, Publishing Declares, has achieved a significant milestone, with 200 companies now committed to its climate action goals. The 200th signatory to join the pledge was Muddy Publishing, a design company known for its commitment to sustainable practices.

Launched in 2021, the Publishing Declares pledge was established to galvanize the UK publishing industry in the fight against climate change. The initiative emphasizes the crucial role publishers can play in promoting environmental sustainability and raising awareness about the climate crisis.

The pledge outlines five key commitments for its signatories:

• Take Action on Climate: Set ambitious, measurable targets to limit global warming to 1.5°C, aiming for net zero emissions across all operations and supply chains by 2050 at the latest.

• Protect Life on Land: Work with supply chain partners to prioritize resource efficiency, sustainable materials, and processes, while continuously innovating to incorporate new and recycled materials.

• Strengthen Partnerships: Collaborate with authors, illustrators, business partners, and peers to turn climate aspirations into tangible actions that safeguard the planet for future generations.

• Educate for Sustainability: Empower employees to become climate literate, ensuring they apply this knowledge in their work and contribute to the industry’s sustainability efforts.

• Advocate for Sustainability: Use their platforms and expertise to drive positive climate action and raise awareness of environmental issues.

With the recent appointment of a new chair for the initiative’s Taskforce, the strategic focus is now on empowering signatories to meet their climate action goals. This will be achieved through enhanced knowledge sharing and collaboration across the industry.

The Publishing Declares pledge continues to gain momentum as more companies recognize the importance of taking concrete steps toward environmental sustainability. The Publishers Association encourages more publishers to join the initiative and contribute to a greener future for the industry and the planet.
