The Publishers Association celebrated strides in sustainability at the inaugural Publishing Declares Summit, reflecting on progress since the 2021 launch of the Publishing Declares pledge and setting new priorities for the future.
Megan McCubbin, zoologist, conservationist, and author of An Atlas of Endangered Animals, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of protecting biodiversity and life on land, a critical pillar of environmental conservation.
Panel One, chaired by Dan Conway, CEO of the Publishers Association, featured Sarah Burton (Deputy CEO, Society of Authors), Charles Light (Production Director, HarperCollins), and Debbie James (Vice President, Booksellers Association). They discussed the value of collaborative efforts and peer learning to drive sustainable practices within the publishing industry.
Panel Two, led by Jude Gates, Chair of the Publishers Association’s Sustainability Taskforce, included Vicky Ellis-Duveen (Sales Director, Clays), Lisa Faratro (Director of Environment and Sustainability, CPI Group), and Sam Warren (Sustainability Manager, Woodland Group). The panel emphasized the growing demand for sustainable solutions and highlighted recent innovations and advocacy efforts with industry partners.
A video presentation showcased the success of Publishing Declares, which now boasts over 200 signatories committed to adopting sustainable practices. Attendees also experienced a preview of Carboned OUT!, a board and card game designed to educate players on carbon emissions and environmental impact.
The summit underscored the publishing industry’s continued commitment to sustainability, with a collective call to action for deeper collaboration and innovative approaches to environmental challenges.
