Springer Nature, a leading publisher in the academic and research world, has released its second annual Open Access (OA) report, reaffirming its commitment to transparent and accessible research dissemination. The report underscores the significant advantages that authors gain by publishing their work through Springer Nature's gold OA model, contributing to a more open and reproducible research ecosystem.
One of the key findings of the report is that authors who publish their work through Springer Nature's OA platform experience greater usage and impact compared to those published by other mixed model or pure OA publishers.
The report presents several noteworthy findings based on publicly available data. Springer Nature has made a significant contribution to the open-access (OA) landscape by publishing more than 1.25 million OA articles. The report reveals that authors who opt for Springer Nature's fully open-access portfolio consistently experience the highest levels of readership, with their articles amassing nearly 4 million citations in 2022, underlining the impact of their research.
In addition, authors publishing in Springer Nature's hybrid OA journals enjoy superior citation rates when compared to their peers from other publishers, with an impressive average citation rate of 6.6. The report also highlights a positive trend in the number of downloads for authors' OA content published by Springer Nature, showing a 15% increase for hybrid journals and a 10% increase for fully OA journals between 2021 and 2022.
Moreover, transformative agreements (TAs) have proven pivotal in driving OA growth, with TAs enabling the delivery of three times more OA articles in Springer hybrid titles in 2022 compared to author-choice OA.
Lastly, Springer Nature's leadership in the field of OA extends to books, with the publisher becoming the leading publisher of OA books centered on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)-related topics in 2022, further solidifying its role in advancing open-access publishing.
In addition to the Open Access report, Springer Nature publishes its Annual Progress Report and Sustainability Report, sharing data and strategy to underscore its commitment to transparency and accountability in serving the global research and academic communities.
