On June 16, 2025, the third PubTech Conference was held in Beijing, marking a new focus on academic publishing under the theme Publishing’s Future Empowered by Technology. Organized by China National Publications Import & Export (Group) Co., Ltd. (CNPIEC) and co-organized with the Society of China University Journals and APPA Key Laboratory, the event was supported by the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM). PubTech 2025 aligned with global partners to examine how technological advancements are reshaping the scholarly publishing landscape.
The conference took place ahead of the Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF), the world’s second-largest book fair, PubTech and the STM APAC Conference are two leading events focused on advancing international cooperation and innovation in academic publishing.
STM participated with a delegation comprising Caroline Sutton, Mark Robertson, Sameer Puri, Lei Shi, Eric Na, and Shuai Yan, contributing to discussions on technology’s evolving role in research communication. PubTech offered a shared platform for publishing professionals, technologists, and academic stakeholders to engage on future-facing themes.
The event convened international experts from major publishing houses, research institutions, and technology firms. Keynote sessions addressed topics including publishing integrity, corpus construction, and copyright protection. CNPIEC CEO Lin Liying outlined AI developments such as the “Luffa” large language model and its applications in scholarly communication. STM CEO Caroline Sutton emphasized the publishing industry's tradition of innovation and highlighted China’s growing investment in high-quality academic publishing.
Speakers from Elsevier, Clarivate, Wiley, and other organizations shared their perspectives on how artificial intelligence and digital technologies are transforming knowledge production, distribution, and publishing workflows. Panels explored how AI is influencing areas such as research integrity, content licensing, and corpus-building, offering insights into future directions for innovation.
Several new technologies were introduced at the conference, including Clarivate’s Academic AI Platform, MDPI’s Journal and Article Management System, CNPIEC’s Luffa AI Studio, and Scinapse, a discovery platform developed by Pluto Labs in South Korea.
PubTech 2025 welcomed over 300 attendees from the global academic, publishing, and technology sectors. The following day, focus shifted to the APAC Conference, which continued the exploration of scholarly communication trends with an emphasis on open science in the Asia-Pacific region.
