STM publisher Springer Science+Business Media, Germany, has announced the appointment of Dr. Ralf Ueding as Managing Director of Springer's Birkhäuser Verlag AG in Basel, Switzerland, effective May 6, 2008. He succeeds Dr. Sven Fund, who left Birkhäuser at the end of March.
Ralf Ueding most recently was Managing Director of ADAC Verlag in Munich, a position he held since 2004. Before ADAC Verlag, he was Managing Director of corporate publishing at Hoffman und Campe in Hamburg, Germany, and from 1998 to 2000 he was Publishing Director of Grafe und Unzer Verlag in Munich, Germany.
Birkhäuser is claimed to be one of the largest specialised publishing houses in Switzerland. It publishes more than 200 new titles annually in the fields of architecture, BioSciences, computer sciences and mathematics. Additionally, the company publishes some forty specialised periodicals in these areas, among them the design magazine form and the renowned Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences. More than eighty per cent of the publications appear in English and are distributed throughout the world.
