Rhodes University (RU) has announced the launch of a platform for storing and sharing research data and open educational resources available at https://researchdata.ru.ac.za/, powered by Figshare.
The new platform will allow researchers to maintain control over the storing and sharing of their research data, including access control and licensing options for reuse. Every piece of research data published on RU’s Figshare will be assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) for citing and researchers will be able to measure the reuse of that data using views, downloads, and citations tracker, as well as an Altmetric score, where applicable.
The platform is furthermore made available for the distribution of Open Educational Resources (OERs) as authored by Rhodes academics, for reuse and/or incorporation into similar resources for educational purposes.
Both the research data and the open educational resources are made accessible publicly and the use thereof is clearly indicated by the incorporation of Creative Commons Licenses for easy identification of terms and conditions of use.
The platform has already been used to publish research data from the departments of zoology and entomology, geology, and ichthyology and fisheries science. This item is a figure published on RU’s Figshare associated with a publication, which can be linked directly to the figure.
