Road to Open: Library and Institutional support sustains open access in mathematics journals through S2O in 2024 -

In a collaborative effort to uphold the principles of open access in the realm of mathematics research, EDP Sciences and the Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles (SMAI) has announced the successful continuation of the Subscribe to Open (S2O) initiative for their mathematics journals in 2024. This marks another milestone in their journey towards sustaining equitable and affordable access to scholarly content without the burden of article processing charges (APCs).

The "Road to Open" series, initiated by EDP Sciences, sheds light on the progress made in promoting open science, particularly through models like S2O. This monthly series showcases the collaborative efforts of publishers, libraries, and funding bodies, emphasizing the importance of their collective contributions in fostering open access.

This year, the subscription targets for the mathematics journal portfolio have been met, ensuring the uninterrupted dissemination of high-quality research in an open access format.

The success of the S2O model is attributable to its collaborative nature and its potential to establish fair and sustainable open access practices. Financial support from various institutions, including the Fonds national pour la science ouverte (FNSO) and CNRS Mathématiques, has been instrumental in facilitating this transition to open access. Notable contributions from CNRS Mathématiques and the CERMICS Lab, École des Ponts ParisTech, in 2024 further underscore the growing recognition and support for the S2O model within the academic community.

Transparency remains a fundamental aspect of the S2O model, with EDP Sciences committed to providing stakeholders with comprehensive financial and operational data. Plans to update the Transparency Report with 2023 data are underway, aligning with the principles of open science advocacy.

The six mathematics journals participating in the S2O program for 2024 include ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations; ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis; ESAIM: Probability and Statistics; Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena; RAIRO – Operations Research; and RAIRO – Theoretical Informatics and Applications.

As EDP Sciences and SMAI continue their journey towards open access in mathematics, the success of the S2O initiative stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts driving positive change in scholarly publishing.
