The Sheridan Technology Group and Dartmouth Journal Services (DJS) have developed iPhone and iPad apps for the Journal of Cell Biology, The Journal of Experimental Medicine, and The Journal of General Physiology. These journals will soon be available in the iTunes App Store as downloadable, full-text, mobile applications. The apps were developed in conjunction with The Rockefeller University Press (RUP).
App users can stay up-to-date with the latest articles, search full-text, and bookmark content for later viewing. The apps will include a number of features that are firsts for Sheridan's mobile app offering, including individual and institutional authentication, PDF download, and access to supplemental data and related articles. Another first, user-configurable offline caching of content, provides access to full-text articles (including high resolution figures and tables) – anywhere, anytime – even without a network connection.
In addition to journal content, the apps also offer access to a number of social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr, plus RUP's biosights and biobytes podcast series and other RSS feeds. The incorporation of social media tools makes it easy to share content, and the instant alert feature immediately notifies users of the availability of new content.
RUP plans to launch the apps, free of charge, in mid-November 2011. During a brief introductory trial period, access to full-text will be available to all who download them. After the trial period, access to full-text will require a subscription, but abstracts will be available to all users.
Sheridan Full-Text Apps are the latest in a suite of mobile products developed and supported through Sheridan Technology. Others include Sheridan Mobile Alerts, Sheridan Mobile Editions, Sheridan Mobile ePrints, and Sheridan Print-to-Mobile QR Codes.
