Roger Schonfeld appointed Managing Director of JSTOR Digital Stewardship Services -

ITHAKA has announced that Roger Schonfeld will lead JSTOR Digital Stewardship Services as its managing director.

JSTOR Digital Stewardship, launched in April 2025, is a digital collection stewardship service designed to help libraries and archives describe, preserve, manage, and share their unique collections at scale. The service integrates next-generation digital asset management with AI-powered collection processing through JSTOR Seeklight, long-term preservation with Portico, and enhanced discovery opportunities via the JSTOR platform.

Kevin Guthrie, president of ITHAKA, emphasized the collaborative nature of the service’s development, highlighting the input of librarians and archivists in addressing their challenges around digital collections. Guthrie noted that Schonfeld, who joined ITHAKA in 1998 and has been leading the internal work on this service for over a year, brings extensive knowledge and experience to this role at a pivotal time.

Schonfeld has spent more than two decades working with libraries, museums, and publishers, supporting their transitions through digital transformation. For the past three years, he has served as vice-president for Ithaka S+R’s program in libraries, museums, and scholarly communications, as well as vice-president of organizational strategy for ITHAKA overall. Recognized globally as an expert in digital preservation, collections management, and shared infrastructure, Schonfeld has authored books and reports, contributed to the Scholarly Kitchen, and served on task forces focused on collection diversity and sustainability. He is also serving his second term as board member and treasurer for the Center for Research Libraries.

Schonfeld expressed his dedication to supporting libraries and cultural institutions in their efforts to steward collective knowledge and heritage, aiming to make this work thoughtful, affordable, and impactful. He described the development of JSTOR Digital Stewardship as a rewarding opportunity to work alongside the JSTOR team and the broader community, addressing persistent challenges in collection management. Schonfeld emphasized his commitment to helping library, archive, and museum professionals enhance their work through this service.
