Routledge's 'Contemporary Social Science' brings out special issue on higher education -

Routledge Journals, part of publisher Taylor & Francis Group, UK, is supporting the Campaign for Social Science. Its journal Contemporary Social Science has published a special issue on higher education.

The social sciences are seen to make a vital contribution to the UK economy and society, one that is often underestimated. The Academy of Social Sciences has set out to highlight the crucial role that social science plays in modern society in inspiring innovation, creativity and enterprise across all disciplines. Routledge, the Academy's publishing partner and major sponsor, is supporting its Campaign for Social Science.

Routledge, claimed to be one of the oldest academic publishers, has sought to support creative and intellectual freedom, stimulate the discussion of diverse viewpoints, and assist cross-disciplinary conversations. It has been instrumental in developing academic disciplines and in creating new ones, such as sociology, media studies and cultural studies.

Higher education is undergoing widespread changes, both because of the direct impact of the economic downturn, and as a result of the subsequent cuts implemented by the coalition government. The journal of the Academy of Social Sciences, Contemporary Social Science, is publishing a special issue focussing on Challenge, Change or Crisis in Global Higher Education.

Guest edited by Prof. Miriam David, the journal examines the changes in higher education and their implications for the future of universities. The authors ask challenging questions about forms of equality, equality of educational opportunity, equity or diversity and social justice, across the educational spectrum and how these issues affect and are affected by higher educational policies. The education system is evolving in the face of new challenges and the special issue seeks to put the implications of this change firmly in the spotlight.
