The Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS) has released a Peer Review Guide to support early career researchers in developing the skills and confidence needed to participate in scholarly evaluation. The initiative responds to increasing demand for reviewers and interest among early-stage academics who feel underprepared to contribute.
A survey conducted at an RMetS early career conference revealed that 90% of participants were eager to engage in peer review but lacked sufficient guidance. The new resource addresses this gap, emphasizing the value of peer review as both a learning tool and a pathway to professional development.
Peer reviewing offers researchers exposure to emerging science, enhances writing skills, and builds familiarity with publication standards. It is also recognized as a credential in the process of becoming a Chartered Meteorologist. For institutions and journals, early-career participation helps meet growing editorial demands in an expanding research landscape.
RMetS complements the guide with mentorship and support programs that aim to nurture a new generation of researchers capable of maintaining the integrity of scientific publishing while advancing their careers.
