The UK's national academy of science, the Royal Society, has announced the appointment of Dr Julie Maxton as the new Executive Director. She will succeed Stephen Cox who will step down in early 2011.
The Executive Director is appointed by the Council of the Royal Society and is responsible for the general administrative business of the Society. It is a full time post and Dr Maxton will be the first woman to hold the post in the history of the society.
Dr Maxton is currently Registrar of the University of Oxford and was previously Professor of Law, Dean of the Law Faculty and Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Auckland.
