Sage celebrates 60th anniversary with progress report on academic impact and social responsibility -

Sage, a leading global academic publisher, is celebrating its 60th year in business by releasing its annual Independence with Impact Report. The report showcases the company’s continued progress in key areas, including academic impact, diversity, equity and inclusion, sustainability, and the advancement of academic freedom.

Since its founding in 1965, Sage has been committed to publishing resources that not only advance academic disciplines but also foster critical thinking, promote social change, and support new learning methodologies. The 2024 report highlights the company's ongoing dedication to developing high-quality research and resources that reflect diverse perspectives on pressing global issues.

2024 Highlights Include:

• Promoting Critical Thinking: In response to rising misinformation, Sage’s 2024 teaching resources have been designed to strengthen critical thinking skills among students. Additionally, the company hosted the fifth annual Critical Thinking Bootcamp, attracting over 2,000 registrants worldwide. A keynote webinar featuring Dr. Tom Chatfield, bestselling author of Sage’s Critical Thinking, was a key part of the event.

• Sage Policy Profiles: This free, browser-based tool allows researchers to easily locate, visualize, and share their work’s citations in policy documents worldwide. By the end of 2024, Sage Policy Profiles had gained more than 19,000 users.

• Commitment to Sustainability: Sage made significant strides in reducing its environmental footprint, achieving a 52% reduction in global emissions across its operations, using 2019 as a baseline.

• Diversity and Gender Equality: Sage continues to champion diversity and inclusion, with 67% of leadership roles in the US and UK held by women, reflecting the company’s commitment to gender equality at all levels of the organization.

• Ensuring Research Integrity: Sage was the first publisher to adopt Dimensions Author Check, a tool that helps identify patterns of misconduct and paper mill activity. This innovative tool supports the company’s ongoing efforts to uphold research integrity.

• Community Engagement: In 2024, Sage employees in the US and UK dedicated over 1,600 hours to nonprofit and charitable work through various volunteer initiatives. Additionally, the company sponsored the annual “Banned Books from the Big Chair” event at the American Library Association Conference, where over 200 participants read passages from their favorite banned books in support of the freedom to read.
