SCOAP3 has introduced an innovative Open Science evaluation mechanism as part of its 2025-2027 contractual framework (Phase 4). This new system conducts an annual assessment of publishers based on predefined Open Science criteria, with financial compensation adjusted accordingly. The results of the first evaluation are now available.
The initiative is designed to incentivize publishers to enhance their Open Science practices. The evaluation measures progress in key areas, including the implementation of persistent identifiers (such as ORCiD and ROR), metadata completeness, availability of open peer review, compliance with accessibility standards, and adherence to transparency principles established by the SCOAP3 community.
By linking publisher compensation to these assessments, SCOAP3 is advancing a more transparent, equitable, and sustainable model for open access publishing.
An online SCOAP3 Forum is scheduled for June 18, 2025, offering participants an opportunity to explore Phase 4 contract details and Open Science evaluation elements. Further information will be provided in the coming months.
